Us GAP students are split into different groups for ministry that are separate from our groups for church. We each do our ministry's on Saturday mornings some last longer than others though. The ministry group that I am in is called Metro. I have 5 people in my ministry group including myself. There are 3 ladies that lead this ministry and have been apart of it for several years. One lady named Karen leads our ministry and is from New York and now lives in Costa Rica with her husband who is from Costa Rica. Metro is a worldwide ministry that ministers to kids on the street by going regularly to neighborhoods and play games with kids, shares verses and Bible stories with them, sing songs with them, and just love on them. The kids that live in the neighborhood that my group will be going with every week is a area of poverty and abuse. Sexual abuse is a huge issue here in Costa Rica. Almost all of the children in this area have been abused by family members. We use a ladies garage to set up our props and sound system which is a huge blessing. This lady lives at the end of a dead end road with houses around it. This area looks like what most of the rest of Costa Rica looks. Then you can walk down this dirt street which is not accessible to vehicles since it is so steep. When you go down this dirt street with houses (which are not what I would call shacks but I wouldn't consider them houses either) on both sides and they are build with all different kinds of materials. The people that live in this area are Nicaraguan. This shows how in general Costaricans see themselves as above the Nicaraguans. There is racial tension between the people from Costa Rica and Nicaraguans. We go to these houses down the dirt street every week before Metro starts to invite kids to come. We also have music playing so the kids know that we are there and they come to the garage when they hear it. Before metro starts we play with the kids and bring soccer balls, jump ropes, and a parachute which they love. When Metro starts we welcome the kids then pray then say the rules to keep the kids from getting too out of hand. Then we sing a few worship songs in Spanish of course. After that we have the 4 Most Important things which are about how Jesus love them and died for them so they should live for him. Then we have a game which is boys verses girls. Then they have a Bible verse for that week and a lesson then a story that ties in the lesson. Then we pray and have prizes for kids that answered questions right or won in a game. Then we send them off with sucker. I think it's amazing what the people working with Metro are doing for these kids.
These kids need to know God's love and I would greatly appreciate it if you would pray over these kids for safety, for their parents and relatives to have a job, provide for the needs of these kids, and to treat them with love and respect, and for kids to be taken out of home if necessary and placed in home where they will be raised to love Jesus and have all of their need met. Also if you would like to send kids toys like balls, jump ropes, etc. for these kids that would be wonderful! You can send those things to:
Carretera a Sabanilla
Del Gimnasio del Este
800 Mts. Norte
Tercera casa a la mano izquierda
Casa Amarilla con bandera de CR
Antes del Puente
San Jose, Costa Rica
